Why Conduct a Roof Safety Audit?
Address Safety
Conducting a comprehensive roof safety audit is one proactive step in creating a safe and secure working environment for all who access and conduct maintenance tasks or other work on your rooftop areas. EDGE’s roof safety audits help you determine the most appropriate safety equipment and systems to use. An assessment can help to identify if there is a lack of fall protection, damaged fall protection equipment, or potential fall hazards and offer solutions to reduce risk of injury or fatalities.
OSHA and ANSI Z359 Compliance
OSHA identifies falling from heights as one of the most common causes of workplace injuries and fatalities. EDGE’s competent and qualified team of experts complete a detailed analysis of the entire rooftop to identify risks. Be assured that your rooftop complies with OSHA and ANSI fall protection requirements to maintain safe rooftop working environments.
Who Needs a Rooftop Hazard Assessment?
There may be various reasons to check the status of your rooftop fall protection compliance. Perhaps you’ve had an HVAC upgrade or some maintenance project completion. Perhaps your roofing membrane has been repaired or replaced, or there was a recent remodeling project impacting your rooftop. Another reason to have a roof safety audit is when it’s been two or more years since you’ve had your rooftop fall protection assessment.
Prevent Liabilities
A rooftop safety audit gives valuable information to building owners, facility managers, and those who have a responsibility for the maintenance and safety of the building. And as such, a roof safety audit safeguards the well-being of personnel working at heights and prevents potential costly liabilities.
Our height safety experts conduct each roof safety audit with knowledge and understanding of OSHA and ANSI requirements for accurate and compliant recommendations, addressing five main areas of concern for rooftop safety. What are the five main areas that EDGE professionals consider when conducting a roof safety risk assessment?
How to Perform Roof Safety Audit: Five Main Areas of Assessment
EDGE professionals identify any potential hazards, safety concerns, and offer solutions in the following five crucial aspects of a rooftop:
Rooftop Access
Safe and convenient access to your roof allows for maintenance and repairs, as well as inspections and installations. Each roof safety risk assessment includes evaluation of each point of access to the rooftop, including ladders, stairways, and roof hatches. How do people access the roof or elevated area of a roof? Is each access point properly secure and OSHA compliant? Are there existing safety measures, such as guardrails, ladder grab bars, self-closing gates, or landing platform? Our team of professionals consider these questions and more as they complete each roof safety risk assessment.
Falls can occur at access points, and resultingly, it is imperative to have fall protection on and around each roof access point to ensure the access can be done in a safe manner. OSHA regulations include that ladders and hatches are secure with a self-closing gate and appropriate guard railing. Our team has extensive knowledge of codes and requirements for dimensions and safety features, such as fixed guardrail system on exposed sides or self-closing gates or offsets.
Roof Openings
There are roof openings that you may not consider until doing a roof safety risk assessment. Roof openings include skylights, roof hatches, or other openings that tools or equipment could fall into. Workers must be protected from falls through skylights or rooftop hatches. Because roof openings can be dangerous, OSHA 1910.28 requires a skylight screen or railing on exposed sides.
EDGE’s roof safety audit personnel complete a detailed fall protection assessment of each roof opening to help you identify risks, hazards, and offer solutions.
Unprotected Roof Edges
Another crucial aspect of a rooftop in a roof safety risk assessment is unprotected roof edges. Any unprotected edge while working at heights poses a danger. This applies to roof edges and roof walkways and crossovers. Per OSHA 1910.28, when work is performed less than 6 feet from the roof edge, each employee must be protected from falling by a guardrail, safety net, travel restraint, or personal fall arrest system.
Perhaps your roof has a parapet wall. Some parapet walls may not be sufficient to provide adequate fall protection. With EDGE’s roof safety audit, our experts can determine whether your parapet meets fall protection standards.
Unprotected edges pose a safety hazard and can lead to tools, materials, or equipment falling to the surface below.
EDGE roof safety audit specialists use their knowledge of OSHA requirements and safety expertise to assess any unprotected roof edge hazard and offer solutions to ensure people’s safety. Further, an assessment and advice from our fall protection experts can help our customers determine solutions that best fits their roof.
Rooftop Navigation
Parts of a low slope roof can be designated as work areas. These work areas can be 6 – 15 feet from the edge and are required to be marked with warning lines. There may also be roof crossovers or roof access stair systems which protect workers as they navigate up and down obstacles and other features of a roof. In addition, there may be products used such as tie offs, anchor points, and horizontal lifeline systems spanning sections of the roof for the user to safely navigate the roof to carry out duties such as facade access and other maintenance tasks.
Consistent inspections of the rooftop are essential to detect and to address potential hazards. Evaluating the various aspects of rooftop navigation is a part of EDGE’s roof safety audit.
Rooftop Equipment or Obstacles
Various equipment such as HVAC units, ducts, pipes, solar panels and more can be stored on the rooftop. Rooftop equipment carries risks and safety issues and challenges to access. Sometimes roof hatches or mechanical equipment where workers need to access are next to the roof edge.
There may be roof areas obstructed by piping, ducting, or other equipment which need to be accessible for surveying, repairs, or maintenance. Perhaps a crossover or exterior roof access stairs are needed to provide safe access to equipment on various levels of the roof. EDGE can provide information as to whether any existing crossover or access stairs are sufficient.
You may wonder if your rooftop has the needed fall protection such as a railing section to wrap around an obstacle to provide a barrier between the obstacle and the leading edge.
EDGE’s roof safety risk assessment gives you needed information to address multiple rooftop equipment or obstacles safety concerns. Extend the lifespan of your existing rooftop fall protection equipment by identifying potential issues, replace or repair areas before they become major costs or potential safety risks to users through regular roof safety audits.
In essence, a thorough analysis of the rooftop surface including these 5 main aspects of rooftop safety is included in each EDGE roof safety audit.
